Present in all places

For the very first time I did my "Pray as you Go" discipline in a parked car, in a parking lot in Southport North Carolina.  Geoff and Vicky are in the grocery story and after a busy morning of talking on the phone to both my spiritual director and Susan - I sit in the car in prayer.

I look at grey skies - it is only 52 degrees right now.  There are palm trees in my view as well as construction workers and shoppers coming and going.  And still this is a good place to pray, to listen to music and hear God's word.  Yes, God is present in all places - even here.

What I am listening to are the words from Matthew about humility and pride.  Words I continue to need to hear.
All who are exalted will be humbled
All who are humbled will be exalted

At the end he talks about living in the truth - the TRUTH! - of who we are  - not the center of the world and a beloved child of God.

I just returned from a quick trip to Bald Island which is off the coast here.  We got there by ferry and it is 50 degrees here.  The purpose of our trip was to see a house which Geoff and Vicky rented for a special week this summer celebrating Geoff's 70th birthday.  I will come back that week and I know it will be fun. It was cold driving around the island on a golf cart and it was very cold on the ferry coming home.  We ended up on the deck of the boat bundled against the wind with coats, scarves, gloves and masks.

And surprisingly I  enjoyed standing and just watching the sea gulls  in the wake of the ferry as the island disappeared from sight.  I found myself almost in a reverie praying - thanking God for the blessing of the day, the love of my brother and his wife, and the beauty and wonder of creation.   And experiencing myself cold and alone AND embraced the God the of love at the same time.  And who knew?  Standing on a ferry boat in the middle of the Cape Fear river is a good place to pray.  God is present in all places.

Many days my prayer life is disciplined to a particular time and place.  Today - in a parked car in Southport or on Ferry on a cold afternoon I am blessed to focus on God's presence with me and love and call upon my life.

God is present in all places.
